The ecosystem

What are wetlands?

They are transition areas between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, where water is the main regulator of physical, chemical, and biological processes. They can be freshwater, brackish, or saltwater, permanent or temporary. As a defining feature, their depth at low tide never exceeds six meters.

Swamps, marshes, rivers, estuaries, deltas, mangroves, and even coral reefs are wetlands.

What are wetlands?

Why do they matter to us?

They are among the most productive ecosystems in the world and vital to human survival, sustaining the water cycle we all depend on.

Climate & carbon

They regulate the global climate by capturing large amounts of carbon and help mitigate climate change as buffer zones.

Resources & health

They purify and detoxify human waste, and supply raw materials, medicinal extracts, and abundant food resources.
